The Art of Writing

A long time ago, when people could speak but before they learned the art of writing, sometimes they communicated with knots. Different colors, sizes, and forms were tied in string and recognized as symbols of communication. For example, “soldier” might be tied in a blue knot, and “love” might be a pink knot. Numbers were recognized by the amount of knots in the string. This form of communication was called “quipus”, a word from Peru, meaning “knots,” and was used on all five continents. Long before it evolved into writing, this was the only way for people to communicate across long distances. (more…)
